Lambertville High School

New Jersey · USA · School

Built in 1854 and burned twice, the New Jersey school is remembered for Buckeye, a player carried off the field after a championship game against New Hope.

Lambertville High School in New Jersey was built in 1854. Fire destroyed much of it in 1926 and it was remodelled the following year. Rumour holds that another fire in 1992 finished it for good, though we have not found an official closing date for it.

One classroom on the second floor is central to the reports. Several accounts describe finding the blackboards there covered with drawings of children crying and burning.

The better known legend is Buckeye. It exists in two versions with the same beginning: a championship football game between Lambertville and New Hope across the river in Pennsylvania, and an intense one. During an ordinary play, one of the New Hope Buckeyes was tackled to the ground. When the rest of the players got to their feet, the boy stayed where he was, lying still. The versions part company after that, and neither has ever been settled. The name stuck to the school rather than to the visiting team, and it has outlived the building.
