The Black Diamond mines were the largest coal operation in California, worked largely by Welsh and Cornish miners, and the towns around them, Somersville, Nortonville, Stewartville, are gone entirely. The cemetery at Rose Hill is all that remains, and it holds a great many children who died in a scarlet fever outbreak.

Clayton survived because it was the town the miners came to on their days off, which is exactly what this account describes.
