Kennesaw Mountain

Georgia · USA · Road

Fog rolls through the field, drums are heard in the distance, and points of red light appear across the ground and grow brighter toward the main trail.

Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia was the site of one of the bloodiest assaults of the Atlanta campaign in 1864. Thousands of men were killed or wounded on this ground in a matter of hours.

The park is heavily patrolled at night, which is why the accounts begin with people parking a mile away and walking in along the edge of the woods.

What they describe follows a sequence. Deer appear and run at them, and are gone. Fog moves through the field. Drums are heard clearly in the distance. Then points of red light begin appearing across the ground, and as visitors reach the main trail they become more frequent and brighter.

The deer and the fog have obvious explanations, and eyeshine from animals accounts for a good deal of the rest.

The battlefield is a national park, it closes at dusk, and the patrols are there for reasons that predate any ghost story.
