Kendall Green

Washington DC · USA · School

The students at this school are deaf. What they report is hoof beats, and they feel them through the ground.

The Model Secondary School for the Deaf stands at the back of the Gallaudet University campus in Washington, on a hill facing Rhode Island Avenue. The school was founded in 1969 and the university in 1857.

The students feel hoof beats moving through the campus.

The route is thought to be a road used during the Revolution towards Pennsylvania Avenue.

This is the second site in this collection where the witnesses are deaf, and both are worth taking seriously for the same reason. These students are not reporting a sound they think they heard. They are reporting vibration through the ground, which is a physical event, and they are the population most practised at reading it.

A person who has spent their life detecting the world through vibration is a better instrument for this than anybody with hearing.

The campus is private and is not open to visitors.
