In one of the boys' dormitories at Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu, students have seen a Hawaiian woman dressed in the fashion of the 1800s.

The boys who see her say she is the woman in the portrait that hangs in that dormitory.

That portrait is of Bernice Pauahi Bishop, and she is the reason the school exists. She was the last direct descendant of Kamehameha the Great, she declined the throne, and when she died in 1884 she left her entire estate, an enormous portion of the land of these islands, in trust to educate children of Hawaiian ancestry.

The school she created has been doing that ever since.

A figure recognised from a picture on the wall is a real problem for the sceptic and for the believer both, and the boys are the ones making the identification.

The school is private and is not open to visitors.
