Students at the San Jose school blame the lighting tricks on George, who is said to have fallen from a catwalk. Nobody has ever died in the building.
The large theatre at Independence High School in San Jose, California has a presence the students call George. The legend holds that he fell from one of the catwalks while working above the stage.
What is reported is theatrical rather than frightening. Lights switching on and off during presentations. Seats folding down and back up with nobody beside you. Students rehearsing alone describe him playing with the lighting rig, which is the detail that comes up most often.
The entry is worth keeping precisely because of what the students themselves say next. Nobody has ever died in that theatre. The fall that supposedly explains George did not happen, and no history of the land or the building has ever been produced to account for him either. He has simply been present since the school was built, and the backstory arrived afterwards to explain a presence people had already agreed on. That order of events, the ghost first and the tragedy invented later, is more common in American school folklore than the other way round.
