The Devil's Stomping Ground

South Carolina · USA · Execution site

A circle in a field where nothing grows. No plants, and not so much as an ant or an earthworm in it.

There is a circular patch in a field off Highway 521 in Lancaster County, South Carolina where nothing lives. No plants grow in it, and people say you cannot find an ant or an earthworm inside the circle.

The story is that it was an execution ground.

This is Waxhaw and Catawba country. The Catawba Nation is still here, one of the few southeastern nations never removed to Oklahoma, and their reservation is a short distance from this spot.

Bare circles in fields have soil explanations. Salt, buried concrete, old fire sites, herbicide and compacted subsoil all produce them, and they persist for decades.

What that does not explain is the complete absence of invertebrates, which would be worth somebody testing properly.

The field is private land.
