About a quarter of a mile down a long driveway near Byron, California, an old orange hotel from the late 1800s is still standing, and the remains of it are largely intact.

Local account holds that a good many people died there.

What has actually been seen is an old man.

Byron Hot Springs was a serious resort. People came from San Francisco for the mineral water, the hotel had its own railway stop, and film stars stayed there in the 1920s.

What happened to it afterwards is stranger than the ghost story. During the Second World War the army took it over and ran it as a secret interrogation centre for prisoners of war, known as Camp Tracy. Thousands of Japanese and German prisoners passed through it and the site was classified for decades.

The property is private and derelict.
