Horse Thief Canyon lies west of Grand Junction, Colorado, connected to the Colorado National Monument, and it earned its name honestly.

In the nineteenth century horse thieves drove stolen herds up into it and kept them there until it was safe to move them on. The canyon has a narrow entrance and high walls, which is exactly what you want if you are hiding a hundred horses.

One night the sheriff surrounded the place, and the thieves were shot, along with some of the horses.

What is reported in the canyon is attributed to both.

Horse theft on the western slope in that period was a hanging matter in practice if not in law, and posses did not always trouble with arrests.

The canyon is public land, part of the McInnis Canyons conservation area, and is open to walkers and riders.
