Holcomb Road runs off Route 199 near Bowling Green, Ohio, and it carries one of the best known legends in the state.

A bus full of children was going down the road when the driver, in a rage, steered it into the woods, took out a stand of small trees and came to rest against a large one.

It did not happen. There is no crash, no children, no driver, and no record of anything of the kind on this road or anywhere near it. Bowling Green State University students have been going out there for fifty years and the county has been dealing with the consequences for just as long.

What people do report is lights in the trees and figures at the treeline.

The road is narrow, unlit and lined by ditches, and generations of students driving it at night looking for a bus that never crashed have crashed on it themselves.

It is a public road through private farmland.
