The sightings begin around Lee Drive and continue as far down as Gardere Lane, and they cluster in late September and early October, though not exclusively.

The history is solid. Baton Rouge was taken by Union forces in 1862 and a battle was fought for it in August of that year. Confederate troops moved through this country repeatedly, and the siege of Port Hudson, a few miles up the river, ended in 1863 after forty eight days and was the longest siege in American military history.

Men in those armies were ragged and filthy. It is the single most consistent description in every contemporary account of them.

Highland Road is a public road through a developed part of the city.
