Hell's Bridge

Michigan · USA · Bridge

An iron bridge in the Michigan woods off Friske Road. Stand on it at midnight and the story says you hear the devil laughing.

On a winding dirt road called Friske, beside the Rogue River in Algoma Township, Michigan, there is a small turn around for no obvious reason. A trail leads from it into the woods and ends at an old iron bridge.

The legend goes back to the 1800s, when Algoma barely existed and Rockford was still called Laphamville. A man named Elias Friske is said to have murdered several children and claimed a demon had made him do it. The bodies were found in the part of the river the bridge now crosses.

Stand or sit on the bridge at midnight and, according to the story, you hear the devil laughing. Visitors also report hearing the children crying.

No record of Friske or the killings has ever been produced, and the road carries the family name for entirely ordinary reasons. The bridge and the trail are real and the walk in is short.
