A Civil War era building on the Bucks County line, with tunnels beneath it said to have carried people north.

The Hartsville Inn at Warminster, Pennsylvania is a very old building, dating to around the Civil War, and there are tunnels beneath it said to have been part of the Underground Railroad.

That claim deserves a note, because it is made about hundreds of buildings across the north and is true of very few. Historians who have gone looking find that most of these tunnels are root cellars, coal chutes or drainage works, and that hiding people usually meant an attic or a back room rather than anything so elaborate.

Bucks County was genuinely a route north, and Quaker households here did shelter people escaping slavery, at real risk to themselves. The history is solid even where the tunnels are not.

The building later served as a restaurant and hotel, closed in the late 1990s, was used as a Halloween attraction, and then closed altogether.
