The complex at Newtown, Connecticut is an enormous field of more than a hundred abandoned buildings. At its height Fairfield Hills held over four thousand patients.
The buildings are specialised and their names say what they were for. There is a shock treatment block. There is a centre for those committed as criminally insane. The institution's history includes accounts of lobotomies performed without authorisation, and of deaths that were never satisfactorily explained.
Those are the serious charges against the place, and they are the reason it is remembered rather than any of the reports collected there since.
The site has been used as a filming location, including for a television series episode that gave it a wider audience than it would otherwise have had, and that has brought a steady stream of people to the fences.
Much of the campus has since been redeveloped by the town, and parts of it are open as public grounds. The remaining buildings are closed, unsafe and patrolled. The people who lived and died in them were patients, not attractions.
