The history behind that needs stating rather than gesturing at. The Abenaki lived in this country for thousands of years before Europeans came into it, and the conflicts of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries here, over hunting grounds and over land, included attacks on villages that killed people in numbers. Disease had already done worse. Vermont later denied that Abenaki people existed in the state at all, and in the twentieth century subjected them to a eugenics programme.

The Abenaki are still here and are state recognised.

The forest is public land, and moving lights in it have a long list of ordinary explanations starting with other campers.
