In December 1946 a school bus was struck by a train near here. Twelve children and the driver were killed, and it was reported in detail at the time.
This is one of the very few sites in this archive where the school bus crash actually happened.
In December 1946, at a crossing near Silverstreet, South Carolina, a Southern Railway train struck a school bus. Twelve children and the driver were killed. The newspaper reports of the time described the scene in detail that would not be printed now.
That matters because school bus legends attach themselves to level crossings across the United States, and almost none of them have a real crash behind them. The best known, at San Antonio, borrows a Utah disaster from 1938.
This one is in the record.
The person who submitted the account is honest that they have never heard of anybody experiencing anything here, which is a rare thing to admit.
The roads and the crossing are public.
