The Greenbrier Ghost

West Virginia · USA · Haunted site

She appeared to her mother about two weeks after her death and told her what had happened. It is the only case in American law where a ghost's testimony.

Zona Heaster Shue was found dead at the foot of the stairs in her home in Greenbrier County, West Virginia in January 1897. Her husband said she had fallen.

Her mother had never trusted him. About two weeks after the burial, Zona appeared to her, over four nights, and told her she had been killed: that her husband had attacked her in a rage and broken her neck.

The mother went to the prosecutor. He reopened the case, the body was exhumed, and the examination found exactly what she had described.

Edward Shue was convicted of murder and died in prison.

The state of West Virginia has put a historical marker at the site, and it says plainly that this is the only known case in which the testimony of a ghost helped convict a murderer.

The grave and the marker can be visited.
