Just south of this wetland park at Tacoma, Washington is one of the places the Puyallup buried their dead, along the banks of the river that carries their name.

People fishing there have seen a canoe come in to the bank, paddled by a man, and then it is not there.

Singing and voices are reported near the water.

The Puyallup are still here. They are a federally recognised tribe with a reservation that this city was largely built on top of, and the land was taken from them through a treaty they were pressed into and then through a century of erosion of what that treaty promised. The wetland itself was restored from industrial ground.

The name of the park is a Puyallup word.

This is a burial ground as much as it is a park, and the tribe are the people whose view of it matters.
