Furst Corner sits in Beech Creek, Clinton County, Pennsylvania, and operates as a restaurant with a bed and breakfast above it. The building carries the name of the man who owned it around the turn of the twentieth century, and so, according to everyone who works here, does the building itself.

Mr Furst died in a fire. It took hold in his barn, and he went into it to get the animals out, and he did not come back out with them. The way the story is told locally, that is the whole of the man in one sentence, and it is why the staff talk about him with affection rather than unease.

What they notice is the cigar smoke. He smoked them, and once the dining room has thinned out at the end of an evening the smell comes through, unmistakable and unaccounted for in a building where nobody has smoked indoors for decades. Chairs are found moved from where they were set. Guests staying upstairs describe footsteps working up and down the hall at night, unhurried, passing the doors without stopping. One of the waitresses locked up, went back across the room for something, and found the door she had just locked standing unlocked. Nobody here seems to want him to leave, and the food is good.
