The fort held ammunition through the war and the hospital treated the men who came home from it, some of them very badly hurt.

Fort Wingate, east of Gallup, New Mexico, was an enormous ordnance depot during the Second World War, storing munitions across miles of desert bunkers.

It also had a hospital, which treated men returned from the war. Some had lost limbs. Some had injuries to the brain that they would live with for the rest of their lives, at a time when there was very little understanding of what that meant and very little help available.

The fort has an older and darker history as well. In the 1860s it was one of the places the Navajo were held after the Long Walk, when the army forced thousands of people to march hundreds of miles from their homeland. Many died in that confinement.

Both of those histories are on the same ground.

The site is closed, unsafe, and largely under Navajo Nation and federal control.
