Fort Stanwix

Around sunrise you can sometimes hear drums and fifes. A woman is heard crying for her sick child, and a one legged man has been seen by the staff.

Fort Stanwix at Rome, New York is a reconstruction built on the original site, and soldiers in period dress are reported all over it.

Around sunrise, drums and fifes are heard.

A woman is heard crying for her sick child.

A one legged man has been seen by employees as well as by visitors.

The fort withstood a three week siege in August 1777, when a British force came down from Canada expecting to take it easily. It held, and that failure was part of what unravelled the whole campaign that ended at Saratoga.

The garrison included women and children, as garrisons did. They were not visitors, they lived there.

A man with one leg is a specific and entirely plausible figure in an eighteenth century fort, where amputation was the standard surgical response to a wound in a limb.

The fort is a national monument and is open.
