A Columbus, Ohio school built into the surviving buildings of a Civil War camp. One was the hospital. Another, the Shot Tower, made ammunition.

Fort Hayes in Columbus, Ohio is partly built into what remains of a Civil War camp, and several of the original buildings are still standing and still used for classes.

One of them was the camp hospital. What is reported there is what you would expect of a Civil War hospital: the sounds of the dying and the wounded, figures in nursing uniform of the period moving along the corridors, and soldiers.

The other building with a reputation is the Shot Tower, which was used to manufacture ammunition during the war. Making ammunition in the 1860s was dangerous work and a number of people died doing it here.

The combination is unusual. Most American schools with a military past occupy a site where something once stood. This one holds classes inside the buildings themselves.

The school is in use. The accounts come from pupils and staff who spend their days in a hospital and a munitions works that were converted rather than replaced.
