A Michigan massacre story that circulated for years, until investigators found that neither the killings nor the subdivision ever existed.

This entry survives as a case study in how a haunting gets built out of nothing. The story placed a subdivision called Lambert Estates off Monroe Road in Lambertville, Michigan, formed in 1957 and made up largely of a road named Verna Drive. In the early summer of 1978, it was said, a glass plant worker from Toledo walked into a house on that road and killed an elderly couple with a hammer he found in the garage, then moved from house to house through the night until nine people were dead.

None of it happened. The Monroe County Paranormal Society investigated the claim and their contacts in the sheriff's department confirmed that no such murder had ever occurred anywhere in the county, let alone in Bedford Township. There was no subdivision called Lambert Estates either. As one investigator noted, a mass killing on that scale would have reached the local news, and nothing of the kind ever did.

We keep the entry because the retraction is the useful part. The tale spread for years on the strength of specific names, dates and a body count, which is exactly what makes an invented haunting convincing.
