The story holds that he escaped from the federal agricultural research centre nearby, the product of an experiment crossing humans and animals, and that he killed and ate people here in the 1950s and 1960s.

None of that happened. There were no such killings, and the research centre studies crops and livestock.

The legend's actual origin is traceable. It spread through this county in the early 1970s after local newspapers ran reports of a large creature seen in the area, and it grew from there through school playgrounds and campfires into what it is now.

That does not make it less real as a piece of folklore. Two generations of children in this county grew up with him, and the road still gets visitors.

The road is public and residential, and the research centre is federal property.
