The grave by the library

California · USA · School

During the remodelling in September 1999 a burial was uncovered beside the new library building, believed to be that of a Native chief. It made the front.

When this school at Fallbrook, California was thoroughly remodelled, the work uncovered a grave just to the right of the new library building. It was believed to be the burial of a Native chief.

That was September 1999, and it was front page news.

Since then there have been reports at the school at night.

What matters more than the reports is what the discovery represents. This is Luiseño country, and the villages of this valley were here for thousands of years before the mission, the ranchos or the town. Construction in southern California turns up burials regularly, and California law now requires work to stop and the Native American Heritage Commission to be notified so that descendants decide what happens next.

A burial found under a school is not a ghost story. It is somebody's ancestor, and the community it belongs to is still here.

The school is in use.
