Gold Brook Covered Bridge at Stowe, Vermont is known to everyone in the state as Emily's Bridge, and it is the most reported single structure in New England.

The story is from the nineteenth century. A girl was to elope with a man her parents would not have. He told her to meet him at the covered bridge nearest their homes, the next day at noon.

When she arrived there was nobody there. She waited for hours.

What visitors report is scratching on cars, sounds on the bridge deck and the sense of something moving along it.

Honesty requires one further note. There is no Emily in the Stowe records, and the name has been traced to a poem written by a local student in the 1960s. The bridge is genuinely old, built in 1844, and the reports predate the name.

The bridge is public and carries traffic.
