In the fire of 1923 a student called Mary is said to have jumped from a third floor window. The fire was real. The death is another matter.

Elon burned in 1923. The fire destroyed the main building and much of the campus, and the college was rebuilt afterwards, which is why the older buildings there are what they are.

The story told in West Dorm is that a student named Mary tried to escape the fire by jumping from a third storey window and died.

No death is recorded in that fire. Everybody got out.

What is reported now is the chandelier in the parlour swinging on its own and the lights flickering, along with an account from a young man who was sleeping there.

A real disaster with no fatalities, given a fatality by later students, is a common pattern. The fire was the biggest thing that ever happened to this college, and a fire without a death does not satisfy a ghost story.
