Eloise

Michigan · USA · Hospital

At its height Eloise held thousands: a poorhouse, a hospital and an asylum on one enormous site. Part of it is an office building now.

Eloise in Westland, Michigan was one of the largest institutions of its kind in America. It began as the Wayne County poorhouse and grew into a complex holding thousands of people, combining a poorhouse, a general hospital and a psychiatric asylum on a single site with its own farm, its own bakery and its own cemetery.

People who died there without family to claim them were buried nearby under numbered markers.

Part of the complex is now an office building, and the accounts come from the people who work in it as well as from the teenagers who come for the thrill. Voices are reported, lights switch on and off, and visitors describe growls and moaning.

A great many photographs have been taken here, and photographs in dark buildings prove nothing.

What Eloise actually was needs no help from any of that. Most of the site has been demolished.
