There is a marked grave in the middle of the car park in front of the hotel, next to the stop sign. She was a Harvey Girl.

In the middle of the U shaped car park in front of El Tovar at the Grand Canyon there is a small patch of ground beside the stop sign, and in it a marked grave.

It belongs to a Harvey Girl who worked for the Fred Harvey Company.

The Harvey Girls were young women recruited from across the east, sent out on the railway to staff the hotels and restaurants along the Santa Fe line, held to strict rules and living in dormitories far from home. They were one of the first large groups of American women to work independently at that distance from their families.

A caped figure in black is reported on the path leading up from the canyon rim to the hotel.

El Tovar opened in 1905 and is still the hotel on the South Rim. The grave is a few steps from the front door and most guests walk past it without seeing it.
