An unfinished road on the old Chief Ladiga trail in the Alabama foothills, abandoned mid build in the 1980s and never explained.

Dump Road is not an official name. It belongs to a section of the old Chief Ladiga trail in the foothills of the Appalachians outside Jacksonville, Alabama, and it earned the name from the rubbish that local people have tipped up the mountain over the years. Early settlers used the trail through the 1800s.

The road sits above an unmarked neighbourhood called Brownwood Estates. A paved stretch was laid up the hill to meet the old route, intended as an expansion of the subdivision. It was never finished. Work stopped in the 1980s and the pavement simply ends.

What circulates locally, unconfirmed, is that the contractor responsible for developing the neighbourhood had an experience on the old road and would not go back. Whether or not that is true, the physical evidence is there for anyone who drives up: a properly engineered road that leads nowhere, on a trail that was carrying traffic long before Alabama was a state. Half finished infrastructure attracts stories, and this one has collected a good many.
