The Driskill opened in 1886, built by a cattleman who lost it within a year, and it has been the most important building in Austin society ever since. Lyndon Johnson courted Lady Bird in the dining room.

A painting is an interesting object to build a reputation on. It is fixed, everybody sees the same thing, and any effect it produces is available to every guest who walks past it, which is not true of anything else in this collection.
