The Devil's Washboard near Gypsum, Kansas is three hills in a row on a country road, each one steeper than the one before.

In the 1950s a car carrying seven teenagers, out drinking and driving, went over the first two and hit the side of the third. The car was crushed almost flat.

The original account calls it a true story and insists on it, and the town has its own name for the group.

No names are set down here. Kansas towns of this size do not forget seven young people at once, and the brothers and sisters of those teenagers would be in their eighties now.

What is reported on the hills is attributed to them.

A road built straight over rolling ground, with blind crests, is a specific kind of hazard, and a young driver taking it fast cannot see what is on the far side. The road is still there, still public, and still exactly as steep.
