A fire in 1888 killed several children on the third floor. The building still houses services for young people today.

This building at Albion Street and Colfax Avenue in Denver was opened in the late 1880s as a home for orphaned children.

In 1888, when it was known as the Denver Orphan's Home, a fire on the upper floor killed several of the children sleeping there.

The institution continued, and it is still going. The Denver Children's Home provides counselling, housing and services to young people today, in the same building.

That continuity is the reason this entry has to be written carefully. The children the reports concern died here, and the children in the building now are living young people receiving care, some of them in difficult circumstances.

It is not a site to visit, photograph or investigate.

An orphanage fire in 1888 would have been a defining event in this city, and the organisation has never hidden it.
