The Castello house

Colorado · USA · Road

James Castello founded this Colorado town and died in this house. His wife Catherine died of burns after her dress caught fire.

The building that houses the coffee shop at Florissant, Colorado was put up as a family home in 1886.

James Castello founded the town. He died at home in this house.

His wife Catherine died of severe burns after her dress caught fire, which was one of the commonest ways for a woman to die in the nineteenth century. Long skirts, open hearths and oil lamps killed in numbers that are barely recorded because the deaths were so ordinary.

Two of their grandchildren, the children of their son Frank, also died young in Florissant.

So the house holds the deaths of a founder, his wife and two children of the next generation, all within one family and within a few decades.

What is reported now is small: the lights come back on after being turned off.

The building is a working coffee house and is open.
