Consolation Church

Alabama · USA · Cemetery

An Alabama church no longer in use. Sit inside the gates and Confederate soldiers are said to be heard marching past.

Consolation Church at Red Level, Alabama is no longer used, and the reason given locally involves banshees, which is an unusual thing to find in southern Alabama and suggests Scots or Irish settlement somewhere in the parish's history.

Sit inside the gates and, according to the tradition, you hear Confederate soldiers marching.

There is an outhouse at the back of the church. Go in alone and the door is said to shut and lock behind you, and to stay shut until somebody else comes and opens it.

Accounts of possession are also attached to the site.

On the way out, the story goes that a small boy appears.

A rural church that has been closed and left standing collects this sort of material faster than almost any other kind of building, and the outhouse detail is the one everybody tests.
