St Clair Hall

Missouri · USA · School

The college was founded in the mid 1800s as a Christian school for girls, and the students slept in the attic. There was a fire up there.

A correction filed in January 2007 moved this account to the right building.

When the college at Columbia, Missouri was founded in the middle of the 1800s as a Christian school for girls, this was the main building, and the students' dormitory was in the attic.

There was a fire in the dormitory, and one of the girls is said to have died in her bed.

The attic is where the reports come from.

An attic dormitory is worth understanding. Girls at a boarding school of that period slept in the roof space because it was the cheapest way to house them, up a single stair, above everything else in the building, with one way down.

No name survives with her.

The college was among the first in the country chartered to grant degrees to women.

The hall is in use.
