The Cogdell Light

A settlement on the edge of the Okefenokee swamp. Drive into the woods, switch off the engine, flash the headlights, and wait.

Most people in south east Georgia have at some point driven out to Cogdell, a tiny settlement on the fringe of the Okefenokee swamp, to see the light.

The procedure is fixed. Take one of the deserted roads into the woods, turn off the car, and flash the headlights a few times.

If the timing is right, something comes.

Young couples are the main traffic, which every account mentions and which explains a good deal about why the ritual involves parking in the dark.

Ghost lights of this kind are reported across the southern coastal plain, and the usual explanations, distant headlights bent along a straight road and swamp gas, cover most of them. The Okefenokee produces the second in quantity.

What separates Cogdell from the rest is how long it has been going and how many people in the region have made the trip.
