In the late 1930s and early 1940s Clearwater Beach in Florida held not only a Coast Guard station but a training barracks for military police, where army MPs prepared for deployment to the Second World War.

What she is running towards, or from, is the part the accounts differ on.

Florida's beaches during the war were not the places they are now. The coast was blacked out because German submarines were sinking ships within sight of shore, bodies and oil came ashore regularly, and the resort hotels were requisitioned for troops.

A young woman running along a wartime beach could belong to any number of stories, and the one attached to her locally is only one of them.
