On 2 October 1925 the tunnel came down on a work train inside it. The locomotive is still under Church Hill.
The Church Hill Tunnel in Richmond, Virginia had already killed men during its construction in the 1870s, and it was closed for decades.
In 1925 it was reopened, because the railway needed the capacity. On 2 October a work train was inside when the roof came down.
Rescuers dug towards them. The engineer was reached, and he was dead. Several men were killed and others got out through the eastern portal.
The tunnel was sealed with the locomotive, several cars and the men who could not be recovered still inside it.
They are under Church Hill now, in a neighbourhood of houses, and attempts to locate the train have been made more than once without success.
