A depot on the bank of the Kanawha River, and a carriage trail that once led up to the Governor's Mansion, now almost invisible from the platform.

The train depot at Charleston, West Virginia stands on the bank of the Kanawha River at the foot of the South Hills mountain drive. It is a handsome building, and visitors regularly compare it to a nineteenth century European town centre.

On one side is the river. On the other is a winding suburban mountain road. Between them runs a carriage trail that in earlier days led up to the Governor's Mansion.

The trail is barely noticeable from the train platform now. Driving up the hill on the right hand side is how most people find it.

The depot has a restaurant and a view. The trail has neither, and it is the trail that people report from.

A carriage road is a piece of infrastructure that stopped being used more or less overnight when the motor car arrived, and what is left of them tends to survive as a path through trees that goes somewhere nobody walks any more. This one goes to a building that is still very much in use.
