All that survives of a Rhode Island amusement park is the carousel. The ballroom burned in the 1960s, and local account holds that people died in it.

The Charles Looff carousel at Riverside, Rhode Island is over a hundred years old and was once part of a full amusement park with a ballroom attached.

Everything else is gone. The carousel is all that is left, preserved as a landmark, with Looff's own hand carved horses still on it.

An employee reports that when she opens up in the morning, the music sometimes starts on its own.

A carousel is an unusually complete piece of machinery to inherit from a vanished park. It still turns, it still plays, and it stands by itself where an entire summer resort used to be, which accounts for a good deal of the atmosphere people describe before anything happens at all.
