There is a statue in Centralia Cemetery in Illinois of a young woman holding a violin, standing over the grave of the girl it commemorates. On certain nights, visitors say, you can hear the instrument played.

A correction filed in September 2004 gives her properly. Her name was Harriet Anne Marshall, known as Annie, and she was the daughter of a wealthy doctor. She fell ill while travelling with her parents and died of diphtheria.

Diphtheria killed enormous numbers of children in the nineteenth century, and it killed them quickly.

What her mother did afterwards is the reason the monument is what it is. A statue of a girl with her violin, cut in stone at the family's expense, is a considerable act of grief made permanent.

The cemetery is public and the statue is easy to find.
