Cemetery Mountain

Alabama · USA · Cemetery

An old man on this Alabama hill lost his dog to hunters who mistook it for a deer. He never found the body, and died not long afterwards.

Cemetery Mountain outside Munford, Alabama takes its name from the number of burial grounds on it, some dating from the late 1890s and early 1900s.

The story people tell is not about any of them.

An old man lived alone on the mountain with his dog. During the hunting season he took the dog out with him. According to the account, other hunters took the animal for a deer and shot it. The old man searched and never found the body. He died not long afterwards.

What brought the story back was a later hunt. Some hunters heard a shot on the mountain and came upon a black labrador, still alive.

That is where the account is usually left, and it is more effective for it.

Of everything collected on this mountain, this is the story that has survived, and it is not really a ghost story. It is about a man who spent the end of his life looking for his dog on a hillside full of other people's graves.
