Castle Hill near Charlottesville, Virginia was built in 1765 by Dr Thomas Walker, a decade before the Revolution.

Walker was a real figure of consequence. He crossed the Cumberland Gap in 1750, years before Daniel Boone, and he was guardian to the young Thomas Jefferson after Jefferson's father died.

Guests staying at the house have been woken in the night by footsteps and by noises they could not account for, and some have been badly frightened by them.

Over the years several have described a woman, young, and by their accounts strikingly good looking.

The house has a documented moment of its own: in 1781 Walker is said to have delayed Tarleton's dragoons here over breakfast, buying time for Jefferson to escape capture at Monticello.

Like every great Virginia house of its date, it was built and worked by enslaved people, whose names are far less well recorded than Walker's.
