Carranza Road

New Jersey · USA · Road

The road is named for a Mexican pilot who came down in the pines here. The memorial is still there, and so are the people who come every July.

Carranza Road runs through the New Jersey Pine Barrens, and it is named for Emilio Carranza.

Carranza was a Mexican aviator, twenty two years old, flying a goodwill flight from Mexico City to New York and back in 1928. On the return leg he took off from New York into a thunderstorm and came down in these pines. Local people found the wreck.

The memorial the Mexican government put up is out there in the woods, paid for by donations from Mexican schoolchildren, and the American Legion post from Mount Holly has held a service at it every July since.

The road also runs through Jersey Devil country and has its own accounts, and a particular time on the twelfth of the month is given for them.

The road is public and the memorial can be visited.
