Campground Cemetery

Illinois · USA · Cemetery

People driving past have seen picnickers among the graves, dressed in the clothes of another time.

This small cemetery sits beside a well used road a few miles south west of Mattoon in Coles County, Illinois, at the corner of two roads.

On some days, people driving past have looked over and seen picnickers in the cemetery, dressed in the clothing of an earlier period.

That is the whole account and it is one of the most cheerful in the collection.

It also describes something entirely real. Picnicking in cemeteries was normal in nineteenth century America. Rural burial grounds were the nearest thing many communities had to a park, families visited on Sundays, ate there, and tended the graves, and the practice only died out when public parks and motor cars gave people somewhere else to go.

The name of this one says it. A campground was where a congregation gathered for days of outdoor preaching, and they brought food.

The cemetery is a public burial ground.
