The Lady in Gray walks between the stones and leaves flowers, most often on the grave of a soldier nobody could identify.

Camp Chase at Columbus, Ohio was a Union prison camp, and more than two thousand Confederate soldiers who died in it are buried in the cemetery here.

Most died of disease. The winter of 1863 and 1864 killed men in this camp faster than any battle, in overcrowded barracks with poor food and worse sanitation, and many of the stones carry only a name and a state.

The Lady in Gray walks among them. She is described as a young woman in a grey suit in the style of the period, and she leaves flowers behind her. The grave she is most often seen at belongs to an unknown soldier.

What gives this account its weight is that flowers really do appear on the graves, and have for well over a century.

These men were prisoners a long way from home, buried by their captors, and somebody has been visiting them ever since.

The cemetery is public and is maintained.
