Guests said they could hear the victims of the fire. A former employee wrote in to point out that there never was a fire.

The story circulating about this hotel at Colorado Springs was that there had been a fire, and that guests could hear the people who died in it.

A correction filed in February 2007 came from a former member of staff and took it apart in one line. There never was a fire at the Broadmoor.

The same person was careful to add that this does not mean there is nothing there, and went on to describe what employees have experienced late at night.

That is exactly the right way to correct a ghost story: remove the part that is untrue, keep the part that is reported, and do not pretend the second follows from the first.

The Broadmoor opened in 1918 and is one of the grandest hotels in the American west, built by a mining and utilities fortune below Cheyenne Mountain.

The hotel is open.
