The road up Ogden Canyon

She was driving from Ogden to Huntsville in the late thirties, late for her own wedding, on a dark curving road. All they found was a veil on the water.

In the late 1930s a woman was driving up Ogden Canyon in Utah, on her way from Ogden to Huntsville.

She was going to be late for her wedding. It was early morning and still dark, the road curves hard, and she was driving too fast.

What they found was a bridal veil floating on the water.

That is the whole account and it is one of the most economical in the collection. The veil does all the work: it tells you who she was, where she was going, and that she went into the river, without describing any of it.

Ogden Canyon is genuinely dangerous. The road is cut into the canyon wall above the river, it was far narrower then than now, and there are stretches with nothing between the tarmac and the water.

The road is public and still demands attention.
