The blizzard is the part that needs no legend. On 12 January 1888 a storm crossed the plains without warning, on a mild morning when children had gone to school in light coats, and killed somewhere around two hundred and fifty people, a great many of them children caught between the schoolhouse and home. Nebraska remembers it as the Schoolhouse Blizzard.
